Language exchange sites and apps compared (2026): what’s free, and where dating is allowed

· 4 min read · Date&Learn team

In short

Most language-exchange apps forbid dating or only tolerate it, and many limit what you can do for free. Date&Learn is the one where dating is openly allowed and everything is free, with no subscriptions and no daily limits.

How we compared

Before you sign up anywhere, four things matter:

  • Dating: do the service’s own rules allow it, tolerate it or forbid it?
  • Free: what you can do without paying.
  • Paid: what the paid plan adds, if there is one.
  • How you talk: text, voice, video or letters.

We went by each service’s own rules and help pages. Where a service doesn’t say something clearly, we don’t guess.

Where Date&Learn is better

1. You can date, openly

On Tandem, HelloTalk and ConversationExchange dating is against the rules; on InterPals and Slowly it’s tolerated at best. On Date&Learn every member chooses what they’re here for: language practice, friendship, pen pals, meeting in person or dating. You can search by that goal. Nobody has to guess, and people who only want practice aren’t bothered by people who want something else.

2. Free, with no limits and no subscriptions

You can write to any member who accepts messages, search by language, country, city and age, and use voice notes and corrections. There is no daily cap on how many new people you can write to, and no paid plan to start a chat.

3. Corrections are part of the conversation, for free

Pick your partner’s message, write a better version, and it appears right under the original:

I learn English since have been learning English for two years.

The chat goes on, nobody has to stop and give a lesson. On Tandem, AI tools that explain corrections are part of the paid plan.

4. Safety built for a community where people also date

  • Members are 18 or over, and every email address is confirmed.
  • Photos and voice messages can be sent only once the other person has written to you, you are friends or you have liked each other in Encounters. Nobody receives them unasked.
  • You choose who can message you: all members, friends only or nobody.
  • You can block anyone and report profiles or messages to moderators, pause your profile or delete it at any time.

5. Your profile stays out of Google unless you say so

Your profile doesn’t appear in Google or other search engines unless you turn that on. The public directory shows only a card: photo, first name, age range, languages, goals and a few lines about you, never your surname or city, and you can switch it off. Members’ profiles are closed to the bots of AI assistants.

6. Find the right pair of languages

The directory shows which native speakers are learning which language, by language and country, so finding someone who speaks the language you’re learning and learns yours takes a minute. The site works in the browser, in 8 languages.

What Date&Learn doesn’t have (yet)

We’d rather you knew before you sign up:

  • A big community. Date&Learn is new. In many cities there are no members yet, and some language pairs are still empty. It’s easiest to find a partner online, by language.
  • Calls. There are no voice or video calls: you talk in text, voice messages and photos.
  • Lessons. A language exchange doesn’t replace a teacher. If you need structured lessons, you need a tutor, not a partner.

Is Date&Learn right for you?

  • Yes, if you want to practise a language with native speakers and stay open to friendship, pen pals or dating, without hiding it, for free and without subscriptions.
  • Not yet, if you need many members in your own city, calls, or lessons with a teacher.

FAQ

Which language exchange apps allow dating?

Of the seven services in this comparison, Date&Learn is the only one where dating is openly allowed: every member shows their goal on the profile. InterPals and Slowly tolerate romance when it is mutual and not pushy. Tandem, HelloTalk and ConversationExchange forbid it.

Is Date&Learn really free?

Yes. Signing up, search, messages, voice notes and corrections are free. There are no subscriptions and no locked features.

Is there a free alternative to HelloTalk or Tandem where dating is allowed?

Yes: Date&Learn. Everything is free, there’s no daily limit on new people, and dating is allowed when both people want it. What it doesn’t have is calls: you talk in text, voice messages and photos.

Is it safe to date someone you met through a language exchange?

It can be, with the usual precautions: get to know the person in the chat first, never send money, meet in a public place and tell a friend where you are. Our guide to language exchange and dating goes through it step by step.

How often is this comparison updated?

Every three months, and sooner if a service changes its rules or prices.

Written by the Date&Learn team. We update our guides when the site or the rules of other services change.
